Do We Control Our Actions and Decisions?
Florida State University philosopher Alfred Mele, author of the book Effective Intentions, has been awarded a 4.4 million dollar grant from the Templeton Foundation to head a four-year project on free will. Along with the ideas of philosophers and theologians, the project will include empirical work by neuroscientists and social psychologists, some of which suggests we don’t have conscious control over our behavior. It’s an important project, says Mele (who’s pro-free will), since experiments have shown that when people are primed to feel they can’t control their actions, they cheat and are more aggressive.
